Your father and I avoided
the flowers in the garage
an upside-down bouquet
you held in your hands,
in my parent's backyard
the new owners,
a young engaged couple
will see them,
petals falling to the cement
and think it was an
accidental oversight
forgotten amongst the move
perhaps, even, a good luck charm
I wish I could say to them
that your actions
were nothing less than intentional
that you left as eagerly as you arrived
that our love began to shrivel and decay
before the flowers did.
